- Jharkhand boils at 40 Deg Celsius, no relief in sight
Jharkhand is simmering at average 40 degree Celsius with maximum
temperature registering 4-5 degree Celsius above the normal. Mercury crossed 41
degree Celsius in many parts of the state. Ranchi, however, simmered at 37.2
degree Celsius, three notches above the normal, on Wednesday.
Jamshedpur and
Daltonganj recorded the highest temperature at 41.6 degree Celsius on
Wednesday, while Chaibasa simmered at 40 degree Celsius. Bokaro recorded 39
degree Celsius.
Meteorological
department officials predicted no relief from the scorching heat for next
couple of days due to unrestricted flow of wind from north-west parts of the
country. Except northeast districts, including Sahebganj, Pakur and Godda,
where partly cloudy weather prevailed, dry weather continued across the state.
North-westerly wind is causing dry weather in Jharkhand,
which may continue for next few days. Northwest states like Rajasthan and
Madhya Pradesh are facing heat wave condition, which encouraged Jharkhand
temperature to rise.
soaring of mercury, residents in several parts of the Ranchi
city, particularly Kanke, Bariatu, Kokar, Harmu and Ratu Road, have started
facing water shortage, as hand pumps and wells have started drying. There are three hand pumps in my locality but all of them
have dried up. Civic body’s water supply is also poor in this area. However,
most of the residents here have now opted for deep boring to cope with the
water crisis.
- Jharkhand goes UP way, pressure mounting for ban on slaughter
houses
Jharkhand is gradually moving the Uttar Pradesh (UP) way. The
actions of UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s are also impacting the tribal
state. After UP’s Anti-Romeo squad model, there is now demand for closure of
slaughter houses in Jharkhand.
About half a
dozen right wing organizations, including Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM), Bajrang Dal
and Jharkhand Gau Raksha Dal have started campaigns across the state demanding
immediate ban on illegal slaughter houses and cattle smuggling in the state.
The
organizations jointly organized a signature campaign at eight places of the
capital city and took out a torchlight procession on Sunday evening to garner
people’s support on closure of illegal slaughter houses.
“We will observe fast on Monday in support of our demand. If
the state does not take any action on illegal slaughter houses, we will
intensify our agitation,” said Sujit Kumar, Ranchi president of Hindu Jagran
Manch (HJM).
Kumar said hundreds of cattle are illegally smuggled from
Jharkhand to other states, which is proved by recent rescue operations
conducted by state police.
“Government should ensure stern action against cattle
smugglers, Kumar claimed that the Jharkhand government had cancelled
licenses of all slaughter houses in 2004. “Despite the cancellations, hundreds
of slaughter houses are functioning in the state.
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Vishwa Hindu
Parishad (VHP) officials held two different meetings in Ranchi urging the state
government to put a ban on the illegal slaughter houses in the state.
- Tribal students’ body locks Ranchi College over ‘saffronisation’
A tribal student body locked Ranchi College, forced suspension
of classes and stopped around 300 students from performing at a a pre-Sarhul
celebration at the governor’s house on Monday in protest against the
rechristening of the college as Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University.
The students
alleged that naming the college after Mukherjee was an effort by the Bharatiya
Janata Party (BJP) government to saffronise the education system in Jharkhand.
Mukherjee was
the founder of BJP and an ex-minister in Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet. He
had quit the Indian National Congress and founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh,
which later became BJP.
On Monday, over
a hundred members of Adivasi Chhatra Sangh (ACS), a tribal student body, locked
the main gate of the college and burnt the effigy of chief minister Raghubar
Das amid anti-BJP slogans reverberating at Morhabadi locality of the Jharkhand
capital.
“We want the university to be named after a local
academician, or freedom fighter. The government has paid no heed to our demands
and named the university after a right wing leader. Why should we allow our
students to perform at the governor’s house for Sarhul?” said Akash Kacchap,
vice president of the Ranchi College student council.
The All India Students’ Federation (AISF) has joined hands
with the JCM to protest the alleged efforts to saffronise education here. All
Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) too has expressed discontentment over the
government’s decision.
